Association of University Evening Colleges (U.S.)

The Association of University Evening Colleges (AUEC) was formerly (until 1939) the Association of Deans and Directors of University Evening Colleges; in 1973 it became the Association of Continuing Higher Education. AUEC's purpose was to study the problems of the evening college and to encourage mutual interchange and stimulation of ideas among members. The papers of the AUEC consist of minutes of committees, convention records; general correspondence; enrollment statistics; history, including six phono-tapes of oral interviews with staff members; newsletters, including press releases and copy; personnel records, including vitae and correspondence; regional meeting reports; and statistical reports of the AUEC. Major correspondents include members of the Executive Committee, editors of AUEC publications, and various education organizations. Galaxy Conference on Adult Education (1969: Washington, D.C.)

The Galaxy Conference on Adult Education was held in Washington, D.C. in 1969. Participating organizations included the American Education Association, American Library Association, Commission of Professors of Adult Education, Committee of Adult Education Organizations, Council of National Organizations, National Association for Public School Adult Education, National Council on Adult Jewish Education, and the National University Extension Association. The records of the Galaxy Conference provide comprehensive documentation of the history, planning and execution of the conference.

Laubach, Frank Charles, 1884-1970.

Personal papers of the missionary, adult educator, and literacy pioneer; also contains organizational records of Laubach Literacy, Inc. Collection includes correspondence, administrative papers, financial papers, U.S. and international projects, writings, photographs, and miscellanea.

Laubach Literacy International.

Papers of Laubach Literacy International, founded in 1955 by Dr. Frank C. Laubach to address the world-wide problem of illiteracy. Established as Laubach Literacy Fund, the organization later became Laubach Literacy, Inc., and finally Laubach Literacy International; in 2002 it merged with Literacy Volunteers of America to form ProLiteracy. Material in the collection includes audio tapes, correspondence, diaries, filmstrips, financial records, journals, literacy journalism papers from courses taught at Syracuse University, motion pictures, newsletters, photographs, primers, reports, scrapbooks, slides and video tapes.

National Association for Public School Adult Education

Correspondence, printed material, reports, budgets, minutes, newsletters, and clippings relating to States Projects Committee, workshops, and other affiliates of the National Education Association of the United States. Includes material pertaining to the American Association of School Administrators, the American Labor Education Service, Robert A. Luke, Elmer A. Mueller, and the National Education Association.

Reed, Bernard W. (Bernard Webster), 1916-1962.

Correspondence, research materials, course materials and a subject file. Reed's dissertation on the origins and history of the Association of University Evening Colleges (AUEC) is well represented, and includes summaries of Proceedings of Annual Conventions, officer rosters, and transcripts of interviews with AUEC executives. There is also information on the Association of Urban Universities (AUU), the National University Extension Association (NUEA), and the Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults (CSLEA) as they relate to the AUEC. In addition, there are course materials from his tenure at the University of Chicago, many of which originated from the Industrial Relations Center. The subject file contains material related to adult education and evening colleges.

Sharer, Robert E.

The papers include correspondence, 1947-1952, articles, reports and other material on adult education by Sharer and others. Material on the Michigan State University adult education programs from 1944-1967 is included.

Sheats, Paul H., 1907-

Files of the American educator (1907-1984). Personal files include oral history, correspondence from and about Theodor Wilhelm, memorabilia, photographs, material on Nazi education, student papers, speeches, selected writings, some audio-visual material, etc. There are organizational records for several California education organizations as well as a number of key national adult education organizations including the Adult Education Association of the U.S.A., Association of University Evening Colleges, Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, National University Extension Association, UNESCO, and University Council on Education for Public Responsibility. There are also more than 40 subject and country files and information on meetings and conferences, and two audiorecordings.

Thompson, Clarence H.

Clarence H. Thompson was director of the Evening Liberal Arts Program, Assistant Dean of University College and Dean of University College at Northwestern University. He served on the board of the Association of University Evening Colleges, and was its president from 1969 to 1970. He also served as the President of the Coalition of Adult Education Organizations. Collection contains correspondence and other material concerning the Association of University Evening Colleges, the Coalition of Adult Education Organizations, and the Missouri Valley Adult Education Association
